Dr. Sinno highlighted several promising advances, including new targeted therapies and treatment options for recurrent and platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. These developments reflect a growing trend toward more personalized treatment approaches that help physicians tailor care to each patient's disease.

While much of the discussion focused on emerging drug therapies, the interview also underscores the importance of considering all available treatment options for ovarian cancer that has spread within the abdominal cavity. One such approach is cytoreductive surgery combined with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC).

HIPEC is administered during surgery after visible tumors have been removed. Heated chemotherapy is circulated throughout the abdomen to target microscopic cancer cells that may remain after surgery. For carefully selected patients with advanced ovarian cancer, research has shown that HIPEC may improve outcomes when incorporated into a comprehensive treatment plan.

We’ve had three trials that show an overall survival advantage with HIPEC...the data are very clear that there is an overall survival advantage.

As ovarian cancer treatment continues to evolve, Dr. Sinno's insights reinforce an important message for patients: advances in care are creating more options than ever before. In addition to newer medications, specialized procedures such as HIPEC remain an important consideration for eligible patients and should be discussed with an experienced multidisciplinary care team.

For patients facing an ovarian cancer diagnosis, understanding all available treatment options—including surgery, systemic therapies, and HIPEC—can help support informed decision-making and ensure access to the most appropriate care.
