Just Keep Moving

One small, manageable step at a time.

Helene, Appendix Cancer Survivor shares some insight on Regaining Strength

Helene

My biggest piece of advice is simple: keep moving.

After surgery, digestive issues, low energy, and healing can make even the smallest amount of activity feel overwhelming. But every little bit helps.

At first, walking from my bedroom to the recliner in my living room was a challenge. Once I conquered that, I started walking loops around the parking lot of my condo complex. I did one loop for a few days, then two, then three. Next was a short trip to the grocery store where I leaned on a cart.

When I felt ready, I ventured onto the golf course. I'd hit two golf balls down the fairway with my pitching wedge, then hit them back. Eventually I doubled the distance. Before I knew it, I was playing one hole, then two.

Those small victories added up faster than I expected.

You don't have to do what someone else is doing. Just do a little more than you did yesterday. Your body has been through something extraordinary, and every step forward is part of your recovery.
