In this ACPMP Research Foundation educational webinar, Dr. Oliver Eng of the University of California, Irvine, and moderator Dr. Deepa Magge of Vanderbilt University Medical Center discuss the newly launched clinical trial, “Metformin in Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Secondary to Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms” (NCT06804824). The webinar explores the rationale behind investigating metformin for pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), who may be eligible for the study, and what participation involves. Dr. Eng also discusses the research that led to the trial, including laboratory findings suggesting that metabolic pathways may play an important role in how PMP tumors grow and survive. The discussion also covers: • Current treatment challenges for patients with recurrent, refractory, or unresectable PMP • The role of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and HIPEC • How the 18-month metformin trial is structured • The trial’s primary endpoint of feasibility and what that means • Metformin dosing, safety, monitoring, and patient compliance • Imaging and surveillance following surgery • Management of recurrent disease and repeat CRS/HIPEC • Questions about metformin and other systemic treatments, including chemotherapy and KRAS inhibitors • Diet and nutrition for patients with PMP • The importance of continued research and collaboration to develop additional treatment options for patients who cannot undergo surgery This study builds on prior research supported by the ACPMP Research Foundation and represents an important step in exploring new treatment approaches for patients with PMP.
